Somewhere on a job site right now, a member of your crew is forty feet in the air on a boom lift, clipping a tent frame into place. It is one of the most routine tasks in the tent business and also one of the most dangerous, and most owners never think about it until something goes wrong.

Falls Are the Risk You Cannot Afford to Ignore

Big tents do not go up from the ground. Crews climb ladders, ride scissor lifts, and stand on boom platforms to set center poles, string cable, and pull cover over a frame that can span fifty meters. Every one of those tasks puts a person above the ground with nothing but a harness between them and a bad day.

The numbers back that up. In 2024, falls to a lower level caused 389 of the 1,034 construction fatalities recorded that year, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data cited by OSHA's Fall Prevention Campaign, roughly 38 percent of every construction death in the country. Fall protection has been the single most cited category on OSHA's inspection sheets for over a decade running. This is not a rare, freak-accident risk. It is the most common way a job site sends someone to the hospital, and tent crews spend more hours working at height than almost anyone realizes.

Federal rules are specific about when protection kicks in. Under 29 CFR 1926.501, any employee on a walking or working surface with an unprotected edge six feet or more above a lower level has to be protected, full stop. A 10-by-10 pop-up rarely puts anyone near that line. A 40-by-100 pole tent, a tension structure, or anything requiring a boom lift almost always does.

What a Real Fall Protection Kit Actually Looks Like

"Wear a harness" is not a safety program, it is a start. A proper kit has a few non-negotiable pieces, and the details matter more than most owners assume.

  • Anchor points rated for the job. OSHA requires anchorages for personal fall arrest systems to support at least 5,000 pounds per worker attached, or be engineered with a safety factor of two under a qualified person's sign-off. A bolt someone eyeballed as "probably strong enough" does not qualify.
  • Fall arrest over fall restraint. A restraint system keeps a worker from reaching the edge at all. Arrest systems catch a fall that already started. Crews that install large tension structures regularly have moved toward self-retracting lanyards that lock out within about two feet of a fall being detected, cutting the drop distance dramatically compared to a fixed lanyard.
  • Enough clearance below the anchor. A harness only helps if there is room for the system to stop you before you hit something. Crews rigging near roof edges, trailers, or equipment below need to calculate that clearance before anyone clips in, not after.
  • Gear that actually fits. A harness borrowed from a taller or shorter coworker and never adjusted is one of the most common problems inspectors find, right up there with employees writing notes directly on the webbing, which quietly weakens the material.

What a 100-Installer Crew Learned the Hard Way

Some of the clearest lessons on this come from operators who install tents at real scale. Sunbelt Rentals' Temporary Structures division runs roughly 100 field installers who average about 50 installs a month, frequently working 25 to 50 feet off the ground, and their experience is a useful case study for any tent business, even one running a fraction of that volume, as covered by InTents magazine.

The team shifted its default from fall restraint toward fall arrest as tents got taller and the machinery got heavier. They found that fit corrections, not equipment failures, were the most frequent issue during inspections, which says something important: most fall protection problems are not exotic. They are a harness strap nobody bothered to tighten. Their program also leans on controlled access zones so only trained installers are near the work at height, tethered hand tools so a dropped wrench does not become its own hazard for the ground crew, and clear radio or hand signals between the platform and the ground.

One detail worth stealing outright: they practice rescue plans instead of just writing them down. A written plan that sits in a binder does nothing for a worker hanging in a harness after a fall is arrested. Suspension trauma sets in fast, and a crew that has actually rehearsed getting someone down safely will move in minutes instead of standing around wondering who has the number for the fire department.

Gear Has a Shelf Life, and So Does Your Paperwork

Fall protection equipment is not buy-once-and-forget hardware. Harnesses and lanyards typically carry about a five-year service life from the date they enter service, shorter if UV exposure and rough use degrade the webbing faster. Gear needs a real inspection before every use and a documented check on a set schedule, commonly quarterly, looking at stitching, metal hardware, and the fall indicator that shows whether a unit has already caught a drop. Equipment that fails inspection gets cut up so it can never accidentally go back into service. It does not get quietly moved to the bottom of the bin.
